Bucknell faculty and staff are invited to join a group read and discussion of The Science of Reading: Information, Media, and Mind in Modern America by Adrian Johns.
Johns traces how reading itself became an object of scientific study — from laboratory experiments on the moving eye, to speed-reading campaigns and Cold War anxieties about information overload — and asks what a century of research has and hasn’t told us about what happens when we read. Copies of the book are free and available at the Library Services Desk of Bertrand Library while supplies last. No preparation required beyond curiosity.
Each meeting will be held in the Bertrand Library East Reading Room and will be facilitated by Janet VanLone (Education) and Matthew Slater (Philosophy)
